Penge town sign nears completion

Proposed Penge Town Sign

The Penge Town sign comes closer to reality next week when Bromley Council officers will meet on the High Street to agree the site.   This is likely to be somewhere along the edge of  Empire Square.   The sign will be a white, illustrated plaque on a tall white pole.   Penge councillors first started the project for a town sign around 18 months ago.   Penge residents were asked to vote on suggestions for the illustrations on the sign.   The final decision was taken at a meeting of Penge Forum.   The illustrations, which represent the wider area of Penge, past and present, include a reference to the original Penge, Paenge, the first Crooked Billet, Watermen’s Square, the Crystal Palace transmitter, the “dinosaurs” in the park, the Police Station, the Penge War Memorial, The Alexandra Cottages and Penge Empire.  Money for the sign was raised by Penge Forum and Penge Traders.  It is hoped that the sign will be erected in early March.
