Plans unveiled for improvements to Empire Square

Work has begun on Empire Square

We heard at Penge Forum last night about the planned improvements to Empire Square.   The canopy is being repainted, the whole area is being cleaned and tidied with new seating and improved lighting.  The bike stands will be moved.   An electrical supply is being installed so that future town centre events can be more ambitious.   The supply will also be available for stalls for any fairs or markets in future.  The firemen’s memorial will be preserved.   The Penge Town sign (see previous blog) will be put up at the edge of the pavement in front of the square.

Work is beginning now, though it is unfortunate that BT got in early and put one of their green boxes right in the middle of the approach to the square from the High Street.   They couldn’t have chosen a less convenient or  more obvious location.  Thanks BT!   Apparently BT are exempt from planning rules.   That’s no excuse for them choosing such an insensitive location.   We have asked the council to do whatever they can do persuade BT to move the box.

There was a suggestion from the floor that the wall of Fashion House could be covered with a growing green meadow.  (There’s one on the side of Wilkinson’s in Sutton High Street).  This wold be a great idea but needs to be financed.  There are also plans for a town guide to be placed on the square.
