Complaint about poor street cleaning

Thank you to all those who came up to talk to us at our monthly street stall on the High Street on Saturday.   As usual, we picked up several issues that we shall look into on behalf of residents.

We have complained for a long time that street cleaning in the area is not as good as it should be.  On Saturday it was particularly poor.  As part of the cuts, a new street cleaning contract has come into operation.

Kathy Bance covers this issue for us.  She wrote to the council:  I understood that street cleaning would be not reduced in Penge & Cator ward with the new contract.  However, every morning at approx. 7am I used to pass the street cleaner who would be working up or down Penge High Street.   He did a very good job.  I have not seen a cleaner for approx. 2 months now and the condition of the pavement is poor.  On Saturday, I watched the Penge High Street Litter Picker, no broom or sweeper used.  The High Street was definitely in need of a proper sweep or clean and on Sunday, there had been no improvement.  Likewise on Monday it was a sorrowful sight.

We have received a reply from the council:  The cleansing for the High Street has not changed and will not change with the new contract.  Currently there is a thorough (mechanical) clean of the High Street required by 9.00am and a barrowman presence from 6.00am until 10.00pm seven days a week.  I believe in the new contract the requirement is to thoroughly cleanse by 8.00am.  The area covered by the barrowman is from High Street at the junction with Thicket Road to the High Street at the junction with Royston Road. Croydon Road is also covered between the High Street & Franklin Road and Green Lane between the High Street and Wordsworth Road Since receipt of your email I have obviously taken this up with the contractors’ senior management team to ensure improvement measures are put in place immediately.
