Empire Square has recently benefitted from a £30,000 refurbishment, paid for by the Mayor of London. It is difficult to see where all this money has been spent. £30,000 clearly does not go far. The canopy has been repainted (though it still looks grubby in places to us), an electricity supply point has been put in at the back of the square to allow greater use for events, ground lights have been installed as have new benches with their own down lighting.
BT then decided to invoke their powers to do whatever they want by insensitively placing their own junction box slap bang in the middle of the entrance to the square. I am sure they paid someone a lot of money for that great design decision.
However, whatever benefits there might be from the work are overshadowed by the very poor state of the block paving on the pavement at this location. It undulates, it is in a variety of colours, it collects stagnant water and it still shows the signs of the marking out for the recent works.
It is not surprising that residents are cynical about the value of the work. (Beckenham by the way is being given £250,00 of council money for improvements.) In our view, the whole area of the pavement from outside Fashion House to outside Boots needs relaying.
I am sure we all want to appreciate whatever improvement works have been undertaken. We have written to the appropriate council officers to ask that they take action to raise the quality of the footpath at this location. We’ll let you know what transpires.
