We have been asked why the CrystalPalacePark waterfall has stopped working again. A few weeks ago, the water was running well, but the upper lake was drying out, as if someone had pulled the plug out. Now the water seems to have stopped running as well, and large sections of the lake are now dry.
Although it hasn’t been as wet a summer as earlier on, it hasn’t been completely dry by any means, so it should not appear to be a a problem with the water table.
We have been told by the council that there have been a couple of problems. One is that a valve on the main water pump has broken and due to its age is not easily fixed. Quotes have been received to have it fixed and the work should begin soon. This pump pushes water from the lower lake up to the top lake and waterfall hence the lack of water at the moment.
Secondly the small weir at the dinosaur/top lake has collapsed due to old age and has allowed most of the water in this area to flood out into the lower lake. Again, the council is trying to find a suitable contractor to quote for and repair it. In the meantime the top lake will look depleted of water.
