The funeral of Khadar Hussein was taking place today, Saturday 23rd June. It is a private affair but we have sent a message of support to the family. The police released the body towards the end of last week.
There is a new, large wreath at the memorial site which looks as if it may have come from someone close to the family. When we visited today, there was no one to ask. Someone has also tried to tidy the site up, removing some of the dead floral tributes.
On Wednesday, we attended a meeting of the Royston Area Residents’ Association, representing the area most affected by the gatherings in the Kenilworth Road car park. Everyone agreed that we had to continue to show respect and sympathy to the family and the site. However, the police, who were also there, again said that any outbreaks of anti social behaviour or late night disturbances should be reported on 999 so they can be dealt with.
Now that Khadar’s funeral has taken place, talks will be held with his family about the future of the memorial site.
Among other suggestions that are being followed up are the eventual replacement of the wooden fencing with either bollards or open metal stake fencing. This will make the site more open and increase public confidence and safety. We will also pursue whether the family would like a permanent memorial to Khadar.
