Help secure 2nd World War memorial for Penge, Crystal Palace and Anerley

We have been writing to local organisations, residents associations and individuals for help in fulfilling an important landmark project for our town.

Penge War Memorial has suffered from vandalism over the last couple of years, including the loss of two brass WW1 commemorative plaques. Fortunately, Bromley Council has agreed to fund their replacement.

While focussing on the war memorial, especially in this anniversary year, a community desire has emerged to commemorate service men and women and civilians who lost their lives in World War 2 and any subsequent conflicts. Penge Forum has gathered the names of an estimated 300-350 men, women, and children connected with the then Urban District of Penge (which includes Crystal Palace and Anerley). Plaques commemorating their sacrifice will be attached to the railings around the memorial outside Penge Recreation Ground — a place where present and future generations can come and remember. We hope to have the plaques installed by November 11th this year. The plaques will be made of a dark grey resin material matching the memorial, but of no scrap value to thieves.

The project is being co-ordinated by Penge Partners with the support of Penge Forum. Although Bromley Council has agreed to make a contribution, this is and should be primarily a community led project. But, we have to raise more than £6000 – a lot for a place like Penge.

We were very grateful to be the main beneficiary of this year’s Beckenham and Penge Air cadets annual dinner. Unfortunately, the War Memorial Trust only funds additions to existing memorials, which would not be appropriate in this instance.

So, we are now contacting a range of other organisations connected with the area that might be able to help us raise the money, either through personal donations or though fund raising activities.

I am sure you will agree that this is a very worthwhile, non-political, project. If you want to help make it happen, donations and any money raised can be sent by cheque payable to “Penge Forum (Memorial Fund)” to Wendie Roche, 19 Burmarsh Court, Manston Close, Penge, SE20 7SQ.

Donations and fund raising collections can also be made online through a PayPal account ( to . All donations will be publicly acknowledged.

Any help will be much appreciated.
