A proposal from West Beckenham Residents Association to register the land at Elmers End as a new town or village green was rejected last night by the Executive of Bromley Council despite calls to do so by the six councillors adjacent to the site. The Executive is the main decision making body of Bromley Council comprising of the 7 Portfolio Holders responsible for each service area. There are no opposition members on the Executive. The Tories were split on the matter with four voting in favour and three abstaining. The aim of the proposal was to prevent development following the closure of the public toilets on the site. The Council are keen to lease the building for office use.

Good. A perilous-to-access roundabout is not a ‘village green’ except in the mind of an imaginative and bossy local residents’ association committee and a few equally undemocratic Tory councillors. Their ‘offices’ idea sucks, equally. My solution: an ‘Alexandra Nurseries’ – style business to maintain the public amenity & regenerate the area – but more crossings are vital!
