Council Meeting Round Up

Labour led the opposition to the Tory cuts at the full Council meeting on Monday night. The Tories did relent over funding for Bromley Youth Music Trust (BYMT) by finding £153k and are going to discuss with them funding for the future thus avoiding imminent closure. So the issue itself has not gone away. Sadly they could not find monies for the small number of people with mild learning disabilties who are helped by the Keyring scheme to remain independent in their own home. We think this is a shameful cut which will not actually save money in the longer term. Bromley Mencap and bme groups including the Pineapple Club have also lost funding. We did actually suggest ways that Bromley Tories could increase their income by charging people more council tax if they leave their properties empty which would raise £90,000 and having our own equity release scheme with the borough having a large number of asset rich but cash poor residents.
