Statement on Council Tax and Adult Care

Statement from Angela Wilkins, Leader of the Bromley Labour Party

LBB agreed a 1.9% increase on Council Tax and the full 2% adult social care precept at the LBB Executive meeting.  Therefore, the the overall increase will be 3.99% which is the maximum you can do without triggering a local referendum.

Angela commented:  “We are appalled at the way the Tory government is undermining local authorities by such savage cuts to their funding.  However by keeping the council tax so low over recent years, Bromley Tories have shot themselves in the foot.

Government grants are calculated on a council’s tax base – keeping it low means you get less grant year on year.  LBB being a ‘low spend, low tax’ council for years now means cuts here will have severe consequences for our residents and businesses.  They could have done things differently, and they could do things differently this year too.

Labour will be putting our alternative budget to the Council on 22 February.”
