Local Parades Initiative

We are working on a bid with Lorraine McQuillan, our Town Centre Manager, as part of LBB’s Local Parades Initiative.  We have identified the small parade on the Sydenham side of Penge East Station which could be improved with a small injection of cash.

We are looking into the cost of repairing paving, street lighting, street furniture and planting, recycling and installation of location signage. We also hope to work with landlords and agents to improve the look of those empty units under the bridge by use of shop front dressing, grants for cosmetic shop front improvements.

For the empty units, rather than the usual vinyl in the window, why not put some shelving behind the glass (or old fruit crates all joined together), get a load of old frames from a junk shop/auctioneers and invite local people to put old pictures of penge in them and use it as a display of memories.

It can be reused. It involves the community. It’s pretty cheap. On these pages there are loads of images posted of old Penge or people sharing memories.

Why not take social media offline and make it work for empty shops?

We have been trying to get someone to do this for years. But they always end up as vinyls.

    • That’s a very good suggestion. I will keep this and bring it up again at the right time. We are advised June/July before this initiative gets going.
Also we have to win the bid first but if we don’t try we cant win. Thanks for your input.
